A-RMS Science Olympiad
Apollo-Ridge Middle School 7th and 8th grade students participate in the Science Olympiad competition annually at the end of the school year. Students are in small teams of 5-7 students and participate in various science/STEM based competitions throughout the two day competition. Founded in 1984, the official Science Olympiad is the premier team science competition in the nation, providing standards-based challenges to over 5,500 teams at 400 tournaments in all 50 states. The Science Olympiad is similar to an academic track meet, consisting of a series of 12 team events. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, the Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. Events such as Egg Drop, Balloon Cart Design, Mirrors, Orienteering, Bridge Building, and Towers help to reinforce teamwork which we know is a critical life skill students will need the rest of their lives. The A-RMS Science Olympiad currently includes both 7th and 8th grades with the hopes of adding 6th grade in the near future. Please be sure to check out pictures from our previous year's competitions.
