Microorganisms in the School

What
Microorganisms in the School
When
3/4/2019

-Students will begin class by being placed in groups of 2-3.
-The students are going to start their Microorganisms in the School Environment lab. After spending a few weeks on bacteria and viruses, the student are now going to apply their knowledge to real life setting.
-The labs objective is to determine where in the school environment you would find the greatest number and kinds of microorganisms.
Today, the students will draft a list of potential places where we will swab for bacteria. Our goal is to have at least 30 different places and or objects be swabbed for bacteria (ex: door handles, laptops, instruments, classrooms, bathrooms and desks)
-Students will also learn the proper swabbing technique for placing their bacteria specimen on their petri dishes.

Tomorrow (Friday)
-Students will work with their lab groups in collecting their bacterial samples. Students will complete the lab procedure and we will allow the bacteria 48 hours (the weekend) to start to grow.

Monday
-Students will carefully count and observe the total number of colonies in their petri dishes. They will be completing a data table with their information. This will only take half of the class; the other half will be spent introducing genetics to the students.

HOMEWORK: NONE :)
