Battle of the beaks lab

What
Battle of the beaks lab
When
10/1/2019

1st: Monday- Students will be given today to finish up their research for their endangered animal; if they don't have their research completed by the end of class, I'll be sending them to working lunch. They need to be actively working on their writing assignment. The students will compete in the Battle of the Beaks lab during class on Tuesday.

- Students will be participating in the Battle of the Beaks lab. This lab demonstrates natural selection through the use various "beak" sizes. The students will use tweezers, binder clips, clothespins, and forks to show various beaks, the students will "eat" macaroni, beans, rubber bands, and toothpicks in a given time frame. The lab demonstrates that the different beak sizes make eating the impossible and that if they were real birds they would die off. Only the birds that are able to adapt to their environment and pass on the favorable traits are able to survive.
The students will have pre-lab and post-lab questions that need to be answered, along with a classroom graph that they will need to construct from their data tables.
