Care Provided/Doctor & Dentist of Record

The school nurse is responsible for the students in middle school and high school; therefore, first aid may be provided by the principal or another designee when the nurse is not available.  If your child has an illness that is accompanied by a temperature of more than 100 degrees and/or has observable vomiting/diarrhea, the child may not be permitted to stay at school. The school nurse will examine for any signs of potential communicable disease as well, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), lice, skin rash, impetigo, scarlet fever, chicken pox.

The school nurse will provide first aid for injuries according to the school physician’s orders.  If additional care is needed, the parent/guardian or designee on emergency card will be notified.  If the school nurse is not in the building, the principal or a designee will provide care.  The school nurse is on call for consultation during the school day.

The school nurse is also available to talk to students, as well as parents and staff, concerning health problems and concerns.  The school nurse also acts as an educator, teaching students as well as parents about health and hygiene.  The nurse may provide educational programs for students as needed as well as for the staff and community.  Finally, the school nurse is in charge of keeping the necessary health records on each student including immunization records which are maintained for each student.

The school nurse provides the following services that are mandated by Pennsylvania law:

  • Vision Screening (Grades K-12)
  • Hearing Screening (Grades 3, 7, 11)
  • Height, Weight, BMI (Grades K-12)
  • Physical Exams (Grades K, 6, 11)
  • Dental Exams (Grades 1, 3, 7)
  • Scoliosis Screening (Grade 6, 7)

The Apollo-Ridge School District also keeps a Physician and Dentist of Record for the District.  They are:

  • Physician of Record:  Dr. Kupas
  • Dentist of Record:  Dr. Merlino

Please keep in mind at times, at times, the school nurse can become very busy.  There may be times where you child asks to see the nurse.  Teachers will use their best professional judgement to determine if they truly need to see the school nurse.  If your child reports to the health room, the school nurse will provide whatever services the child needs.  Please note that the school nurse will use their best professional judgement to determine if a phone call to the parents is necessary.

With that said, some students may try to abuse the school nurse privilege.  This may occur for various different reasons which could include being tired, nervous about a school event, or just trying to avoid work or a task.  Please trust that the school nurse will complete a thorough assessment on your child and provide any services or help the can to your child.
